  87. The System BIOS file contains the Microid Research BIOS ("MR BIOS (r)"),
  88. customized for your Tyan motherboard.  The 1995 MR BIOS (r) core provides
  89. the latest state-of-the-art BIOS technologies that automate most of
  90. your computer's setup and deliver unmatched performance and utility.
  91.  
  92. Unlike most programs that you are familiar with, the System BIOS does
  93. not execute from disk.  Instead, it is stored in a Flash-ROM component
  94. that resides on the motherboard and begins executing immediately upon
  95. powerup.  This Flash-ROM can be reprogrammed by means of a Flash Upload
  96. Utility.  In order to install MR BIOS (r) in your computer, you'll need
  97. to reprogram its Flash-ROM through use of the Flash Loader utility.
  98.  
  99. BE ADVISED THAT THERE IS AN ELEMENT OF DANGER IN REPROGRAMMING THE
  100. COMPUTER'S FLASH SYSTEM BIOS.  If the Flash Load procedure begins,
  101. but fails to completely load a valid BIOS image, your computer will be
  102. out of commission and you'll have to have it serviced.  The Flash-ROM
  103. will need to be physically replaced with another that contains valid
  104. code.  Reasons for the Flash Upload failure include 1) losing power
  105. while the upload is in progress, and 2) specifying and uploading the
  106. wrong file.  Needless to say, this would be a horribly disappointing
  107. experience.  Microid Research Inc. would most sincerely regret such
  108. a misfortune, however, understand that MICROID RESEARCH INC. DISCLAIMS
  109. ALL RESPONSIBILITY AND LIABILITY FOR THE USE AND CONSEQUENCES OF THE
  110. USE OF THIS PRODUCT.  So, please, take your time and be careful!
  111.  
  112. Notice that there are *two* different Flash Loader utilities supplied
  113. in this kit.  Each is designed to program a different type of Flash.
  114. You only need one of them, and should discard the other.  Why two?
  115. Tyan changed their Flash-ROM brand during late production of this
  116. motherboard model.  The original boards used the MX 28F1000 part.
  117. More recent boards use the SST 28EE011 part.  It would be best if
  118. you identify the type that's on your motherboard and select the
  119. correct Flash Loader accordingly.  However, the Flash Loaders do
  120. perform an ID verification upon getting started, and will reject
  121. the wrong type Flash and post a message to that effect.  So although
  122. it's not recommended, you "could" try one Loader and infer from its
  123. response if it's the correct one or not.
  124.  
  125. Both Flash utilities have the identical user interface, which provides
  126. a simple menu of 3 options (4, including "exit").  There are two
  127. objectives of this utility.  First, it provides the facility to
  128. copy the existing BIOS into a disk-file for backup purposes.  This
  129. is option "1. Backup".  The companion function "2. Verify" allows
  130. you to confirm the backup file matches the existing BIOS.  The other
  131. purpose of the Flash Utility is to install a new BIOS, accomplished
  132. through option "3. Upload".
  133.  
  134. Be sure to backup the original BIOS before uploading MR BIOS into
  135. the Flash-ROM.  Otherwise, you won't be able to uninstall MR BIOS
  136. should you want to do so.  Even if you're sure you won't, it is a
  137. good practice to retain all original equipment that is supplied with
  138. your computer, "just in case".
  139.  
  140. The exact steps for uploading MR BIOS are enumerated in the Instructions
  141. section below.  Assuming you have followed those instructions and the
  142. upload has just completed, the Flash Loader will display a message
  143. directing you to reset the computer or re-cycle its power.  Upon doing
  144. so, you will be greeted with an alarming message that the "CMOS Memory
  145. is Corrupt", and the BIOS Setup Utility will be activated.  Don't be
  146. alarmed.  The Flash Loader Utility intentionally clears the CMOS to
  147. simulate a factory-new condition and provoke the Setup session.
  148.  
  149. Upon arriving in the Setup Utility, you will need to reset the time
  150. and date, and manually input the type(s) of Floppy drive(s) in your
  151. computer.  Beyond that, everything else will already be set for optimal
  152. performance and you can simply exit by pressing <F10>.  Or, you might
  153. browse around and tailor some options like Password Security or Power
  154. Management per your preference.  After this Setup session, your computer
  155. will reboot thereafter without any hysterical messages.

  165. Confirm the Flash-Write-Enable jumper is set:  J7= 2-3

  169. Disable power management in the BIOS Setup Utility.

  173. Boot your computer "clean", to a non-Protected-Mode DOS environment.
  174. This is easily done by booting a floppy that contains only DOS, but
  175. neither CONFIG.SYS nor AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  176.  
  177. Step 4

  179. Invoke the appropriate Flash Loader:
  180.  
  181. If the Flash-ROM is  MX 28F1000  run the program  28F010
  182. If the Flash-ROM is SST 28EE011  run the program  29C010
  183.  
  184. Step 5
  185. ------
  186. Select option "1. Backup" to make a copy of the original BIOS that
  187. came with the motherboard.  You will need to select a filename
  188. for the backup file - a good name would be "ORIGINAL.BIO".

  192. Select option "2. Verify" to confirm the backup was successful.
  193. The status will be reported to you, either success or failure.
  194.  
  195. If it worked OK, proceed to Step 7.  Else figure out what is wrong
  196. and correct it.  Repeat Steps 5 and 6.

  200. Select option "3. Upload" to install MR BIOS into the Flash-ROM.
  201. You will need to enter the filename of the MR BIOS image that came
  202. with this distribution kit.  (It should be MR_TYAN1.BIO, unless
  203. somehow this documentation has gotten out-of-sync.  Tell us!)

  205. Step 7a
  206. -------
  207. The upload process may take up to 15 eternal seconds, during which
  208. time you are likely to begin worrying.  Relax, and do NOT shut off
  209. the power or otherwise disturb the computer.
  210.  
  211. You'll be notified with a message on the CRT when the upload has
  212. completed.  Then, and not before then, press the reset button or
  213. recycle the computer's power.
  214.

  221. The first bootup after loading the new BIOS, you will be directed into
  222. the BIOS Setup Utility.  Configure time, date, floppy drive(s) and other
  223. options.  Exit by pressing <F10>.

  227. Win95 Users:  In a few installations, Windows 95 has been reported to
  228. "remember" certain properties of the BIOS that has been replaced by
  229. MR BIOS.  This can lead to some bewildering behavior.  The best rule
  230. of thumb is to unconditionally run Win95's "Hardware Wizard" once after
  231. installing MR BIOS.  If weirdness persists, use the sledge-hammer
  232. approach and run Win95's "Setup".
